The idea of a breeder named Hugues Derzelle, from the Belgian city of Chimay, who decided to give his cows four liters of beer a day, caused a lot of discussion. The reason? Beer would help the cows get better and improve the flavor of the meat.
The idea would have come to the man after reading that Kobe (Japan) steers are massaged, listen to relaxing music and drink beer. In reality, the story is a simple urban legend which, however, the farmer has partly transformed into reality.
The beer served daily to the cattle is a local Sara de Silenrieux and, according to Derzelle, would not be harmful to animal health. Four liters may seem like a lot but, for an adult cow weighing 700kg, that's not too much.
The breeder also explains that the bacteria present in the rumen would immediately digest the alcohol which would then reach the blood only in minimal quantities. In short: no drunk cows!
