Becoming a mother is the desire of many women, but not of all. Belén Álvarez has never felt the desire to have children and for this reason she has always felt strange, especially because she grew up in a large family. Belén is a neurophysiologist and at 27 she decided to undergo a sterilization operation, which consists in the closure of the tubes: a drastic operation with permanent and definitive consequences.
Even when she was little she Belén she understood that she didn't want children: she went to first grade and no one took her too seriously. While her classmates thought about what names she would give their children, she Belén felt strange. She did not understand why she did not feel this desire, and certainly the fact that everyone in her family had had at least 4 children of her did not help the girl to clarify. Everything changed when she heard the response of a teacher to a student who felt sorry for her for not becoming a mother: the teacher, in her seventies, claimed that she had consciously chosen not to have children and that she was still satisfied with her life. This statement opened Belén's eyes.

Today the young woman is part of a global collective called "child free", a refuge for those who deal with questions on voluntary and missed maternity on a daily basis and which offers answers to women seeking information on their rights, for example on how to tie tubas . Deciding not to have children does not mean hating children, and Belén has nothing against them, but simply respecting the desire of women: despite the still strong and ingrained stereotypes according to which being a woman also means being a mother, the movement supports the right to every woman to be able to make decisions about her body and her life. What do you think about it?
