For centuries the world has been populated by strange creatures. Very often their shapes can seem really bizarre but later it turns out that they are really very useful to the ecosystem. This is the case of Abditoconus, a phallic-shaped mollusk. Its function in the world, however, is more useful than you can imagine.
It is one of the few living beings able to eat wood and therefore clean its deteriorated and bad parts. There are also people who have had the opportunity to taste it because, being a clam, it is also edible. In particular, the video of a girl intent on eating it went around the net. Her reaction, however, did not seem very convincing as to induce others to do the same thing.
Strange foods… and where to find them!
In fact, the images reveal the young woman's total disgust in biting into the mollusk. Will it really be that bad? However, the fact is that it is truly an exceptional living specimen. Discovered a few years ago thanks to an international research team led by Janet Voight, curator of invertebrate zoology at the Field Museum in Chicago.
What has attracted the attention of the researchers is more than anything else a protruding appendix that obviously has nothing to do with the classic male genital organ. It is shaped like a virile member, but it has a completely different function, namely that of allowing the clam to breathe.
Those discovered, at the moment, are three: Abditoconus, Spiniapex and Feaya but always according to experts there are many other species, about 60 and divided into six groups. They will also be useful but, as far as consumption is concerned, we trust the reaction of this woman who had an "iron" stomach when tasting this strange mollusk.
