Tony Dunst won his second World Series of Poker gold bracelet during the early hours of Wednesday, July 22. Dunst outlasted a field of 1,361 total entries to emerge victorious in the 2020 WSOP Online $777 no-limit hold’em six-max event, securing the title and the top prize of $168,342. The World Poker Tour commentator won his first piece of WSOP hardware back in 2016 by taking down a $1,000 no-limit hold’em event for $339,254. This was the 35-year-old’s third major title, having also won the WPT Caribbean main event back in 2013.
This event drew a total of 849 unique players who re-entered 512 times to build a final prize pool of $952,700. While the lion’s share of that eas eventually awarded to Dunst, 206 players made the money, with a min-cash being worth $1,048. Among the notable players to cash in this event were Jamie ‘DanBilzerian’ Kerstetter (206th – $1,048), Phil ‘Lumestackin’ Hellmuth (114th – $1,429), and WSOP bracelet winner Ryan ‘protential’ Laplante (99th – $1,524). Laplante has now made the money in 13 of the 21 US-based events held so far this series, with cashes in the last eight consecutive tournaments that have been held.
Other big names who made the money were kickoff event winner Jonathan ‘Art.Vandelay’ Dokler (89th – $1,620), bracelet winner Jason ‘haderade’ Somerville (87th – $1,620), Ian ‘APokerJoker2’ Steinman (69th – $1,810), bracelet winner Andrew ‘WATCHGUY42’ Lichtenberger (61st – $2,001), 2013 WSOP main event champion Ryan ‘BiTC0iN’ Riess (60th – $2,001), four-time bracelet winner Max ‘MaxSparrow’ Pescatori (58th – $2,001), six-time bracelet winner Daniel ‘DNegs’ Negreanu (30th – $5,145), recent bracelet winner Alan ‘GladiusIII’ Goehring (26th – $5,145), and bracelet winner Ankush ‘rickrosstheb’ Mandavia (18th – $8,288).
After taking out WSOP bracelet winner Randy ‘StayAlive’ Ohel on the final table bubble, Dunst was the clear chip leader, with his 8.4 million being more than double the next largest stack. Two-time Card Player Poker Tour Venetian main event champion Jon ‘havuuuuuc’ Turner was the first to fall. He got the last of his chips in with AClub Suit9Diamond Suit up against the KDiamond SuitJDiamond Suit of Dunst. The board ran out JClub Suit9Diamond Suit4Spade Suit4Diamond Suit10Heart Suit and Dunst made jacks and fours to win the pot and send Turner to the virtual rail in sixth place ($26,199).
Krista ‘Pollux’ Gifford was the next to fall when she ran KClub Suit10Heart Suit into the KSpade SuitKDiamond Suit of Dunst. Gifford picked up a gutshot straight draw on the flop, but the jack she needed never materialized on the turn or river and she was knocked out in fifth place ($36,203).
Charles ‘ilosestackz’ Phillips’ run in this event came to an end when he shoved JDiamond Suit8Club Suit from the small blind and received a call from the ASpade Suit10Club Suit of James ‘paymycollege’ Pace. An ace-high flop gave Pace a big lead, and a blank on the turn left Phillips drawing dead. He earned $50,779 for his fourth-place showing in this event.
In another battle of the blinds, Alec ‘Tango_Bravo’ Parslow raised from the small blind with ADiamond SuitKDiamond Suit and then called a shove from Dunst in the big blind. Dunst was dominated with his ASpade Suit9Heart Suit, but a 10Spade Suit7Diamond Suit5Spade Suit8Heart SuitJDiamond Suit runout gave him a straight on the river to lock up the pot and eliminate Parslow in third place ($72,215).
With that Dunst took just shy of a 2:1 chip lead into heads-up play with Pace. In the final hand of the event Pace limped in from the button for 200,000 holding QSpade Suit6Club Suit. Dunst checked from the big blind with JSpade Suit8Spade Suit and the two saw a flop of 7Spade Suit5Spade Suit4Diamond Suit. Dunst bet 200,000 with his flush draw and a gunshot, and Pace called with his open-ended straight draw. The 3Spade Suit on the turn completed both players’ draws. Dunst checked and Pace bet 425,000. Dunst check-raised to 1.6 million and Pace called with his straight and a queen-high flush draw going into the river. The QHeart Suit on the end prompted Dunst to bet 3.2 million. Pace raised all-in for around 8.2 million total and Dunst called with his winning flush. Pace earned $103,940 for his second-place finish in this event
